The race: Here's the report from stage & final GC winner Marijn van den Berg's Team EF Education-EasyPost.

Marijn van den Berg wins the general classification at the Pays de la Loire Tour after sprinting for the final stage win.

On today’s final stage, the entire squad went all in for Marijn. With less than six kilometers to go, Ben Healy came to the front and took a massive pull, quickly splintering the peloton. Marijn stayed safely tucked on his teammate’s wheel as Ben gave 100 percent through the closing kilometers. With two hundred meters to go and rounding the final corner, the Irish champion pulled off as Marijn kicked. Immediately, the Dutch sprinter took the lead, maintaining it all the way to the finish line. He gave a bike throw just to be sure, but Marijn spread his arms in celebration, knowing full well he had taken the stage and the overall win for his teammates.

Sport director Sebastian Langeveld knew that the GC was a possibility for the team so he sent the squad in search of bonus seconds for Marijn, which he secured.

“There was a bit of action but the squad did really well,” Sebastian said. “They stuck to the plan and they did really well keeping it all together and always communicating with each other. This was a course that Marijn can handle really well so in the end it was a bonus to take the overall win in addition to the stage. All the guys did really great, every single one of them. In the end, it was such a luxury to have a rider like Ben leading out Marijn for the entire last five kilometers.”

In addition to two stage wins and the overall title, Marijn earned the sprinter’s jersey and the squad won the team competition.

"I didn’t do it by myself, that’s for sure!" Marijn said after the podium ceremony. "This win is more a team victory than one of my own. I’ve never seen anything like it before, how we pulled that off as a team. We had to take the bonus sprint and Jardi pulled until there. The early break went and he pulled that all by himself too, so he was super important. Then on the local lap, Darren did the first few laps and then Lukas took over so they were just as important as Ben was on the last lap. Everybody put in the same effort today and then Ben did a really incredible lead out. I just did the sprint, that was the only thing I had to do."

Weather at the finish at Château-Gontier-sur-Mayenne at 2:20 PM, local time: 16C (61F), cloudy, with the wind from the southwest at 27 km/hr (17 mph). There is a 14% chance of rain.

The race: Niklas Larsen (Uno-X Mobility) did not start.

Stage winner Alberto Dainese's Tudor Pro Cycling Team posted this:

After two fifth places in the first two stages of Pays de la Loire Tour, Alberto Dainese took advantage of a perfect team work to win in front of Marijn Van den Berg EF Education - Easypost and Sam Bennett.

"The final lap was really hectic" Alberto said. "The first time we came into the circuit we said “WOW, it’s gonna be hectic”, but the guys rode super well. We were always in good position and they did a perfect job. This win is really special and it’s so nice to see that all the hard work done in Winter finally paid off. We started the season well in Mallorca working on my lead out train, but unfortunately I had a bad accident which stopped me from racing for two months. More than this, my grandma passed away recently, so my thoughts are for her.”

Weather at the finish city of Saumur at 1:40 PM, local time: 17C (62F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the west at 31 km/hr (19 mph). There is an 11% chance of rain.

The race: Here's the report from winner Ewan Costiou's Team Arkéa-B&B Hotels.

Breton Ewen Costiou achieved his very first professional success by winning the 2nd stage of the Pays de la Loire Tour region alone.

Ewen Costiou:
“I’ve been circling so much for a while! I’m really super happy. It’s my first success among the professionals, with the Arkea B&B Hotels team. I told Mathis Le Berre to get a head start when It wasn’t rolling anymore. My teammates did a great job to place me at the foot of the bump. At the start of this one I wasn’t the strongest, there was a group that broke away, and I didn’t I wasn’t. I came into the summit with a headwind. On the last lap, Clément Venturini came into our group. He was really strong. I knew that the only way for me to win was to anticipate the sprint given the sprinters who were with us. I attacked at one kilometer two hundred, and I didn’t ask myself any questions. Winning this first professional race is really a relief.”

Roger Tréhin, Directeur sportif:
“I asked Ewen Costiou and Clément Venturini to be patient as much as possible, not to discover each other before the last two laps, and that the best, at a given moment, were going to look at each other, and that it was at that moment- where it was necessary to attack. Which Ewen was able to do perfectly. He has the jersey after this second stage, but EF Education and Marijn Van Den Berg are very strong. Le Gazonfier, Friday for the last stage at Le Mans, will be the judge peace of this Pays de la Loire Tour Region. For the general classification, we will see day by day, without neglecting any opponent, and we will take stock each evening.”

Weather at the finish city of St. Jean de Monts at 2:15 PM, local time: 14C (58F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the south at 35 km/hr (22 mph). There is a 20% chance of rain.

The race: Jérémy Leveau (Van Rysel-Roubaix) did not start.

Here's the report from stage winner Marijn Van Den Berg's Team EF Education-EasyPost.

Marijn van den Berg was not going to let his teammates down.

The Dutch racer rounded the final corner of the first stage of the Pays de la Loire Tour and surged up the outside. He kicked early, thrusting all his power through his pedals, and threw his bike forwards at the line. He looked across at Jon Aberasturi (PRT), catching the Basque sprinter’s eye. Neither of them knew who had won. It came down to a photo finish. Minutes later, the commissaires returned with good news. Marijn had triumphed by the width of a tire.

“I didn’t see who had won so I was waiting for the photo finish,” Marijn said after celebrating with his teammates. “We had to wait for the photo finish. I came a little bit early and I saw him coming and had not much left, so I just jumped. I saw that he dropped a little bit of speed, so threw my bike. I had trained on that quite a bit. I am super happy with this win."

It was a win for the whole team. All day, they kept Marijn out of the wind, as the peloton traversed across the fields of northern France from Fontenay-le-Comte to Saint-Jean-de-Monts. Darren Rafferty made a move off the front to take the pressure off his teammates. Inside the last five kilometers, Ben Healy did a huge turn, navigating Marijn at the head of the swirling peloton. He dropped him off at one kilometer to go.

Marijn was determined to finish off the job. He won the sprint and claimed the race’s first leader’s jersey as well as the lead in the sprint competition.

Another view of the finish.

“The shape is good,” he said, before stepping on to the podium. “I had a bit of a difficult time after Algarve, but then in Catalunya it went really well again and then last Sunday in Flanders I also had good legs and tried to help Bettiol there and now I can go for my own chances here. It is nice to win the first stage.”

Marijn dedicated his win to his brother Lars, who is also a WorldTour racer, but was taken out of action earlier this spring by a crash.

“He is always in contact with me,” Marijn said. “We speak a lot about the races and he tries to help me and I wanted to reward it with a stage win. To do that is special.”

Now, Marijn and his teammates will turn their attention to the next three stages, where they will race to defend their GC lead. After his performance today, Marijn thinks that Ben is the man to go for the win.

“With Ben we have a really strong guy for the coming stages, with all of the climbs, so we will try to go for him and if I can follow then it is nice,” he said.
